A Spectacular Showcase of Geek Culture: The Malta Comic Con 2023
As ardent fans of all things geek, we had the privilege of attending the Malta Comic Con 2023, and I can’t help but rave about this incredible event. From the exceptional organization and captivating setup to the array of activities, this convention was truly a pop-culture paradise. What made it even more special was the presence of some of amazing guests, including the fantastic Colin Cunningham, the talented Marama Corlett, Jorge Vargas Jr and the amazing Alysson Sullivan, who were incredibly friendly and personable with their fans. I am still star struck.
The Set-up
From the moment I stepped through the convention doors, I was greeted by a meticulously organized and visually stunning spectacle. Wicked Comics outdid themselves this year and managed to craft a layout which not only facilitated the flow through isles, but also created a much more open and free environment. As always the event’s organization was impeccable, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
The convention floor was a feast for the eyes, featuring captivating booths and displays. Each corner offered a unique experience, from artist alleys showcasing extraordinary talents to merchandise booths where I could indulge my passions, and spend what little I have left in my bank account. The attention to detail in the setup added to the overall immersive atmosphere, making me feel like I had stepped right into a pop-culture wet dream, were I can talk to my favorite artists and actors on a personal manner.
I must commend the Wicked Comics for their dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. The cosplayers, exhibitors, and volunteers all contributed to the friendly and inviting atmosphere, making it easy for fans like me to connect and share our shared passions.
The Activities
The Malta Comic Con is not just about buying comics and merch, it’s about immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of geek culture. The 2023 edition delivered in spades. Panels and workshops covering various aspects of the comic and geek world were both educational and entertaining. Seeing Pietro Ubaldi live dubbing scenes in Italian felt surreal from someone who grew up listening to his voice shaping the characters that made my childhood. There really was something for every fan, and I certainly made the most of it.
The cosplayers at the convention added to the vibrant ambiance, bringing beloved characters to life and making it feel like I was strolling through a living, breathing comic book. I must say, that since the early iterations of the Malta Comic Con, the cosplay community has come a long way and it is amazing seeing it grow and flourish. The cosplay competition was a highlight, showcasing incredible craftsmanship and creativity that left me in awe.
The gaming area was a hub of activity, where I had the chance to indulge in video games, board games, and role-playing games. It was the perfect opportunity for fellow gamers to connect, compete, and bond over our shared love for the medium. The table-top and board game section was especially amazing and was buzzing with activities through both days. I have to give a shout out to Play-Up who really showed their love for the Cavemen Show.
One of the standout features for me was the dedicated children’s area, where the younger fans had a chance to engage in age-appropriate activities and discover the joys of geek culture, ensuring that the next generation of fans is well on its way.
Exceptional Guests Who Exceeded My Expectations
What added an extra layer of excitement to the Malta Comic Con 2023 were the presence of some remarkable guest stars. Colin Cunningham, famous for his roles in “Falling Skies” and “Stargate SG-1,” was a true highlight. Not only did he engage attendees with his insightful panels and discussions, but he also took the time to interact with fans. This personal touch made the convention an unforgettable experience. To me, talking to him on a personal level and discussing “Falling Skies”, was a surreal experience.
Marama Corlett, another brilliant actor with her roots burried deep here, brought her unique perspective and experiences to the event. Her warmth and willingness to connect with fans made the convention all the more enjoyable. Seeing two protagonists from the massively underrated “Blood drive” was a fantastic nod to the local fan community. It was amazing to rekindle with Marama since our last interview back in 2014.
This year we were also graced with not one, but two Power Rangers. Both Jorge Vargas Jr and Alyson Kiperman Sullivan provided amazing insights from the shows and their careers and really engaged with their fan community. It’s always a fantastic experience meeting these icons and realising how down to earth they really are.
In conclusion, my experience at the Malta Comic Con 2023 was nothing short of amazing, as always. The flawless organization, diverse set-up, and an array of activities ensured that fans of all ages and interests had a fantastic time. The presence of exceptional guests, artists and the local artists and entities added to the event’s charm, leaving me eagerly anticipating next year’s edition. This was a geek’s dream come true, and I’m grateful to have been a part of it.
